As long as owners pay, players demand more and more.

Think of it this way.

The sports market is huge. Billions of dollars are flowing in from stadium/arena revenues, from TV/Radio stations, from clothing sales, from video games residuals.

All that money goes to the owners and managers of teams. They get to keep that money, unless the athletes -- who, after all, are the reason these guys get the money -- say they want their share. So, that $15 million that the athlete tries to bargain for will stay with the non-athlete owner, if the athlete fails to win the negotiation. This is a battle between the suits and the jocks.

As greedy as they are, its nothing with how greedy the owners and leagues are. Pro athletes have a relatively short career and have to maximize their earning potential during that short span. Baseball you could play forever, but with a contact sport like football, hockey, or basketball any game might be your last. And football doesn't do very much with guaranteed money. So yes, they are greedy, but their trying to protect their futures.

There are many factors in athletes asking for more money. First money is a great leveler. If you make more than someone else it shows that you must be worth more than the other person. Secondly, a smart athlete, knows that once he is finished, he must have something to live on, so he invests his money, for his future. Although most athletes have college educations, many of them show a complete lack of being able to express themselves, other than through athletics. Finally, they have many people who they have to support, such as agents, publicists, trainers, and the usual list of hangers on.

It's simply demand and supply. If one club pays more than another for the athlete, he/she will go to the one, which offers more. Sallary is one of, if not the most important decision factor for professional athletes as it is for anyone. OK, ambition is another factor, but at this level most clubs are more or less equal.
Think of it. What would you do if you had a choice between two employers, one of them offering you 1.000 and the other 5.000?
It's not greed, it's professionalism.
