My big question has been not that he was in a bad childhood political situation. It's been that of similar kids, there WERE some with enough conscience at the time to rebel and run away from the country rather than join up.

It just seems to me that if I were choosing a pope that I would want someone who was more secure in doing the right thing even from as young an age as he was. I don't advocate not forgiving him, but I do wonder that he was the kind of person that has become the best person in the world to be the pope.

Under Hitler ALL children were supposed to join the Hitler Youth - He had little or no choice. After the war he had no truck with fascist type organizations but joined the Catholic Church ( which is a different thing, so smart comments are out of place). Anyone is entitled for forgiveness and understanding in their old age for things that happened 60 years ago - and there has never been any evidence produced that he took part in any atrocity or crime against humanity. He was just a kid caught up in situations that now no longer exist in his country - and that is a mercy.

and how does a stupid guy end up becoming the president of the States?

The pope had no choice but to do it. His country was at war and refusing would have meant death. It is the past, it happened 60 years ago. And has he done anything bad, killed anybody while he was in the Hitlerian youth? No so let's forget it.

Hey,man, Germans can't help it-everyone voted for him anyway. As for Saddam-I mean like who's he? Is he catholic-you gotta at least be Catholic to be pope for Christ's sake. A muslim Sunni pope is a lil skinky.
