The Sainsbury Board is responsible for deciding how to spend the profit they make each year. Some of it will be spent on opening new stores, or refurbishing new ones. Some goes on pay rises, tax, new IT equipment or paying off debt.

Each year there will be money left over they don't need to run the business. That money will be paid out to shareholders as a dividend.
