we often forget that most mention of legendry creatures occurred around the medieval time when the world was only just being explored outside of the home countries and often travellers would come back from far away lands with tales of mighty beasts and these would be given names to relate to the tales, often the travellers would enhance a story and give it a magical element to increase there own renown so the unicorn could be a simple animal of earth which has died out or still exists, the other option would be that it is an otherworldly creature. No one can be sure, just because we haven’t seen one in a zoo doesn’t mean that it don’t exist.

There is a unicorn mentioned in the bible. I do not remember where exactly it is, but I read it before. What it says is that at one time God had made an animal that was a horse with a horn on its head. It says that God chose not to save this animal, because He saw no use in this animal.

The fact that you're asking this in the mythology & folklore section instead of zoology seems to indicate that you already know the answer deep down. If not look up mythology in the dictionary.
