I never did. Your nipples are dryed out enough in the beginning without cleaning them. The best way to keep off infection is to keep your nipples moisturized so that they don't crack. That is the most common way to get an infection. If you do clean them use only water and make sure you use lansinoh or another safe moisturizing product. Lansinoh is safe for your baby to ingest at meal times. (obviously not the whole tube of it though)

no, you do not need to clean them, unless you specifically know them to be dirty. i don't know how that would happen, unless you rolled in the mud or something. when you are in the shower, just rinse them with plain water. if you feel you must clean them in between time, use only plain water on a cloth, no soap.
there are two reasons for this. one is that nipples tend to get dried out and sore or cracked if they are cleaned too much. this can happen for other reasons as well, but cleaning, especially with hot water or soap will dry the skin, making soreness more likely. the other reason is that breastmilk is sterile before it comes out, and it has antibacterial properties after it comes out. so a lot of experts recommend that you express a little breastmilk after your feeding and just allow it to dry on your nipples. this will kill germs, and protect your skin at the same time.

you don't need to clean them or put any creams on or anything. your nipples are fine and your baby prefers them to smell like you.
it is also ok after feeding to let a bit of milk stay on the nipple or even to rub it in a bit cause natural oils in the milk help the nipple from getting chapped and help maintain healthy nipples.

No, you don't need to do anything to your nipples prior to nursing.
Have you noticed the little white, pimple-like bumps that develop on your breasts around the nipple during pregnancy/post-partum? Those are your Montgomery Glands. That's what they do.....clean your nipples!

No you don't need to clean them. If they are dirty use a little cold water. Here's a great website with all kinds of information on breastfeeding. Good luck!
