I've never been to New York City, but I've read a little about the subway system because I like trains. From what I've read, the current system is horrendously inadequate but the only talk of upgrading is the 2nd Ave line. From my reading I see that it thrived pretty well when it was owned by two different competing companies. Because of the Great Depression the government took over the system. Now that the Depression has been over for "a couple" of years shouldn't it be returned civilian control? It seems that since the government took over the system hasn't been upgraded or expanded at all. I welcome any comments about the size, capacity, utilization, and so on about the subway system.

It doesn't have to be owned by someone else, NYC could contract a management firm to oversee its future construction or maintenance, but it would still require extra tax monies in order for NYC or anyone else to overhaul it. Something more on the order of the U.S. Government hiring a management company to run the Postal Services, or some states have done the same with their prison systems.

However, I am not sure that NYC wants outside input into how they should run their city.

I am not sure that there is any private company that would want to buy a run-down system, which you portray this to be.

I live a over a thousand miles away from NYC so I have no idea what the system is like.

I think it should be taken over by a non profit organization!Yet closely monitered by a government task force to make sure all is well run and no funds are mismanaged as they say!So many people depend on it!
