And how much does it matter, if it does? What DO these guys know about? --Where is their expertise that qualifies them to be where they are? Are they just luffing along, having a good time, waiting for another 9/11 to perk up and start paying attention again?

I would appreciate a few serious evaluations... bipartisan ones, where at all possible.

It is very important. they cannot properly evaluate he problems in the Middle East without knowing the players. Saudi is now concerned with America pulling out and will back the Sunnis, but at the same time they hate Al-Qaida which is Sunni. Iran is backing the Shiite militias and Hezbollah and Hamas. FATA hates Hamas and they are now shooting at each other. If America pulls out too soon the Middle East will erupt in total war. Sounds like no big deal to alot of Americans as they believe let them kill each other off. The problem is that your gas is going to triple in cost or more. Not to mention Israel is only going to watch Iran build nukes for so long before they take action as they believe Iran means what it says about wiping the Israeli nation off the face of the earth. Count the dead when Israel goes after the nukes as they will probably use their nukes to be sure they get Iran's. That alone will reduce the oil output in the Middle East by almost half.

It's not an unchangable thing. In the interview, the incoming chair noted it was probably important for him to know that, and given the publicity, has every opportunity to use his newly added staff to get him up to speed and to take that into account going forward.

Remember, he still hasn't done a single thing yet as chair, so has yet to lead or set agenda based on ignorance.

At the very least, he will be ahead (the article stated that this guy actually knew a lot MORE than the outgoing leadership - pretty scary) of those who have been setting agenda. Ideally, he'll get to a place where he's informed.

It's a sad commentary where people who have the resources remain completely ignorant, and apparently act out of a desire to politically posture instead of come up with intelligent, thought out answers to problems. It's even sadder that most of us don't seem particularly surprised.

I believe it's important that we know what fuels those two groups and why they are so at odds with one another. They may never be able to peacefull co-exist w/i one country ergo there goes any hope of a one nation Iraq. we are a young country living without centuries of hatred for another section of this country so it is hard for us to understand that deeply rooted dislike.
With politicians, who ever knows what really goes on. I just remember one of the Kennedys bragging about never having worked a day in his life, he's a senator, too.

I'm no expert but I believe if you hold a goverment position you should at the very least have a "base" knowledge of world current events, especially if your country has direct involvement.

I saw the piece, new democrat nominee received the job based on his liberal politics, not knowledge to do the job.
This move to liberal control could indeed be a short two years...with far reaching negative ramifications.
