Hi,

This is not that difficult but a bit complicated though, first you need to have Network Interface Card on both your lap top and desktop and you cable must be in straight mode then connect the two PCs using the laptop and do as follows:
Right click My Computer and choose Properties>computer name
in the cener of the dialogue box hit the change tab and change your computer workgroup's name this name must be uniq on both of the systems "restart the systems after"

Set IPs in TCP/IP settings of the NIC note that both IPs must be in the same range you can use this 192.168.30.1 for one and 192.168.30.2 for the other

turn off the firewall on both of the systems

you are good to go now you are connected and you can exchange data ( I hope u know how to use a UNC Path in order to connect)

Hope it works

If you follow ladeehwk's instructions that should do the trick. You only need a crossover cable and the Microsoft File and Printer sharing service enabled on the computer you want to copy the files from.

Crossover cable is the easiest way or just email it to a webmail address and then pick it up on the other machine. There are various websites for sending files or you could even get into FTP but I would say the crossover is easiest. Also we use our usb memory to act as a go between.

By far the most efficient method, if both machines have a network card installed, purchase a CAT5 Cross-over cable and simply connect the two computers through the NIC's.:

All that needs to be done is to set up a home network with the pc's and you can save from the pc that has them to the pc that you want them to be on by copying from one to a shared directory on the other one. As long as they are on the same network, no other equipment is needed.
I do it all of the time on my network.

Ladeehwk is right. You definitely need a crossover cable if you're going to directly connect the 2.

Set the ip address on 1 to 10.1.1.1 and on the other to 10.1.1.2 and set the subnet mask on both to the same thing - 255.255.255.0. Set up file and print sharing service under network settings. Set computers in same workgroup, share a folder on your laptop, then use windows explorer on the desktop to access \\\shared-folder

Well the easiest way would be to plug them both into a router or swtich. then go into explorer and type // then the name of the other computer or its ip address (which you can find by opening command prompt and typing ipconfig). if you dont have a router or switch you can plug them directly into one another. But then you have to go into the network settings and set a static ip address and subnet mask (id say subnet 255.255.255.0, and an ip of 192.168.1.100, then the other computer 192.168.1.101).
first option is easier

two ways....one you could get a router...which will sutomatically set your computers to be on a network...the other way is to Directly connect the computers together...ensure that both computers are on the same workgroup...Manually set your ip addresses...and all should come out ok...
