Hi. I wonder what is the difference between these two questions? They appeared in a book designed to teach English: American Headway 3, page 111, describing a person.

What is she like?
What does she look like?

THANK YOU in advance.

"What does she look like?" is asked to describe someone's appearance. What does she look like? Well, she has brown hair and blue eyes. "What is she like?" is asked to describe her looks, maybe, but also her personality. What is she like? She's nice and people like being around her.

Hope that helps.

English speakers have difficulty in telling the difference between 'to speak' and 'to talk'. Some say "Can you talk French?" instead of "Can you speak French?" People speak a language...parrots talk. You can use 'talk' when saying that people were having a conversation about something.."They were talking about the football game.."

The first one is a general question! How is her personality, character and appearance! The second one is only for appearance!

"What is she like?" would be referring mainly to personality or the character traits of the person, how good/bad the person is, etc.

"What does she look like?" would be referring to the physical appearance, and may refer to another person or thing bearing similar physical traits as the person concerned.

We say "what's she like" first so you don't think we only care about her looks..... is she funny? Talk much? You know, whats she like - followed by her appearance with photos if available...

The first implies an overall status: looks, attitude, emotionality

The second is strictly looks, perhaps how she is dressed

'What is she like' would imply an interest in mainly personality - is she funny, nice, emotional, dramatic, etc.

'What does she look like' would simply be asking ... what she looks like. It's not really asking about personality type, just looks.

I can tell you.......what I'm like...... without giving you any indication of .......... what I look like.

I'm friendly, outgoing, have a great sense of humour, I don't drink, am lonely but never alone, physically fit for my age, love music......

So you see - I can tell you these things but it doesn't tell you what I look like :-)
