In news stories and pictures my fellow soldiers send me from Iraq, I do see that Iraqi police and soldiers are actively involved in helping hold down the violence there from day-to-day, and while the government seems timid at most and not willing to take control, I wonder if I'm the only one who sees the work of the police and military forces over there? I think they help clean up a lot of messes.

Yea, there have been many positive stories since they're really carrying bulls eye on their backs every day protecting people. But many are involved in revenge killings and few do attack US soldiers. Truth is that violence and secretarian conflicts deserve closer attention at this point especially since the US virtually ignored such problem for long time. And they're all overwhelmed. Many do outstanding job, but they can't keep that up forever. That's why military solution is not what lot of people are looking for at this point. It's really not that military/police are not doing there job, but people are becoming more skeptical of how effective military can be in solving secretarian conflicts. This conflict go beyond just catching bad guys and patrolling neighborhood. We would have been done by now if it was.

Maybe the answer lies in the answer to the question - how did the same forces do their job effectively before the US went there?
