It used to be those ships that crossed the Atlantic with freight. First with sail and then with steam. It was referred to a the cheapest commercial was to ship.It was a regularly scheduled ship carrying mail and packets(packages) and passengers.

Today there is the Island Packet sailboat.

The only Packet I know in the boating world is the make of a sailboat called an "Island Packet".

Packet is a term for a number of small sailing ships. For instance, this term was mostly used before 1900. Today, it would be more known as a fleet.
