I've been working in Customer Care for a fortune-500 company for almost 4 years now. Back then the starting pay for my position was $8.24 an hour. I've received 2 merit increases & am now making $8.94 hourly. I have heard from people in several different training groups that new hires entering my position off the street have been told by HR that starting pay is $10.04 hourly. Ethics aside, do I have any right to investigate further & demand that I be paid at least what the starting pay is for my position? If so, how do I go about this? Technically, employees aren't allowed to discuss salary, at risk of termination. I don't want to jeopardize anyone else in the process. (By the way, the reason I haven't had any more increases in pay is because of the way the local management uses this elaborate point-system to determine whether or not we get a raise --it's all about these numbers, and NOT about customer service, which I am actually excellent at).

PS -- I once tried to talk to my direct supervisor about this, and she claimed to not know what the starting pay was for my position. I think she was lying, though....

Your company can pay you anything they want. you agreed to the pay you are receiving, you have had two raises in four years. if you are unhappy with your current situation, you should seek employment elsewhere. demanding information regarding pay scales, etc... will only put you in a defensive position with your employer and you will never get another raise. get happy or leave.

Being happy at the work place, to me, is all-important because we spend a great deal of our life there. Consider the misery/stress that you will have to suffer for the rest of your time working there. I think it is just not worth it! Talk to your company's HR to find out more. What you heard could be misinformation. HR could help to answer your questions and clear your doubts, if any. I think you could not demand to be paid a certain salary unless it is stated somewhere, but I believe you do have the right to know the starting pay for your position. Logically, you should be getting at least the same pay, if not more, for your 4 years of experience. If you are still not satisfied with the response from HR, you may want to seriously consider working for a competitor as you are likely to remain unhappy if you stay.

Youve been working there for sometime now, so it might be right for your to move on, unless your expecting any promotions. youve got the experience so leave and join another company. or leave permanantly and come back again thus having the new rate. Think about it!

It's not allowed. Go speak to human resources. Equal pay for equal work. Pay equity. Check your local government website to learn more about your rights.
