You might be surprised to know that the UK has only been recently referred to as being 'in Europe'. Up until 1985 in the west you had continental Europe, Scandinavia and Great Britain; however, since 1985 with the UK slowly being integrated with the EU now everyone has had a memory lapse and loudly declare that Great Britain (suddenly the UK) has always been part of Europe. Why? Because continental Europe was considered a sick and troubled region, it had caused the greatest loss of life this planet has ever seen TWICE and Great Britain was seen as a stable and strong nation that occasionally had to wake up and help see to the squabbling continentals because they just couldn't get along. The USA and Canada also saw the UK separate from Europe and only now is it politically convenient to connect the UK with continental Europe. Only time will tell if this partnership will work, the ideology of mass migration was created to prevent continental neighbours fighting and the UK had to sign up to the freedom of movement although they were actually part of the solution not the problem. Will it work? I have my doubts because Great Britain is an island nation with a very strong sense of independence; however, if progressive liberals on the political left hold sway in the UK then we can expect to see a country completely unrecognisable to the brave men and women who fought so hard to keep it safe.

I do. If we got fully on board with Europe we would be part of an organisation that could offer some balance to the other major powers in the world.

I don't think you mean geographically!! Culturally? maybe. Politically, i think UK is mostly part of the USA than a European country. They object to everything EU suggests and they follow everything Bush is saying. How can you stand that? Do you have the same ethics?
