i'm threading a peice of caoted cold roll one end is 1/2-20 right hand thread the other is 1/2-20 left hand thread

Put it in a vise, use lots of oil, and go very slow. Once you get the threads started back it off, thread it on a little more, back it off, repeat. Don't forget to lube constantly.

Clamp it in a vise close to the end that you are threading.
Depending how many threads you are cutting in it, you might have to unclamp, move rod, reclamp as many times as necessary. Keep end being threaded close to vise to support it.
