Answers like we would not be here if everybody thought the same, is in a true sense not appropriate. We are here doesn't mean we are in a bliss. It can be a curse to be born here. Looking for children in one time I can say was a need. It was the time when human race was minority in the world and had a threat from other animals. To protect themselves they probably needed more children. It does not seem to make any sense now. World is bloating with human population. It is not fun either to have children. You cannot presume the child you are gonna get is divine either.
If it is to prove that we are capable of giving birth or are able to create then it is not very good. We have to grow out of it and think much better. I definitely don't want to say that its good to not have children at all. looking at the current population it seems it should be done only in a more wise way. The reasoning that we want our ambitions to be fulfilled by children is unwise.

If we are looking for the things that we could fulfil to be completed by our children, then that is a bigger mistake. If they fail we will suffer more. Is it proper wisdom? If think its a joy that is not true either. It is just an illusion. It all depends on our thinking.
Its not an inbuilt biological desire or urge either. Many of them clearly don't want it. We are not that stupids as animals. Sometimes we just have a lack of wisdom of things. Honestly to me having children is more of wanting to carry your ego forward. Can't we think any better at all? I think it is a good idea to have children with the thought of making good to society. If it is for ego it is just ways of animals. How many ever reasons we comeup with, they sound like a coveruop to our egoistic nature. Isn't that right?

Then what noble cause makes everyone make this decision? Your answers can let me identify if we are just bound by illusion or maya or if there is a true good cause.

for some couples its a natural progression.

I believe it should be monitored better in the country though why should someone who can't support themselves have more than one child ? some have 6 or so. should adopt chinese methods and allow them just the one and that one child have benefits if they choose to have more then they should find a means to pay for the others.

Not everyone should be allowed to have kids either you can't just get in a car - you need a license to prove you are a worthy driver - same should be done with parents.

Like you've already pointed out, it is because people are selfish. They are not capable of unconditional love towards another human being, they can only feel that kind of love if that other person is their own flesh and blood, preferably somebody they can mould to their own image (just like God created man to his own image - of course!). If a person can truly accept another human being for whoever and whatever they are, only then this person is worthy of having a child. Having said that, I am capable of giving this kind of love, but I do not want any children of my own. I don't feel the need that I have to pass down my good and bad genes to ensure my survival in this world. I believe in reincarnation and I do know that I will come back whether I've left a blood line down here on Earth or not. Also, the children of these selfish people will become selfish adults that's why many old people end up in old peoples' home with their beloved children only visiting them once a month (if the oldies are lucky) so what's the point? I will probably end up in one of these homes myself but at least I will not be heartbroken and thinking that the children I brought to this life don't give a damn about me. At least I will know that the reason I'm in there is because I was on my own, although I wasn't unloved.

I believe it's because we want someone to respect and look up to us. Also, humans want to have an effect or impact on the world and the best way to do this is to create. When something is as easy and fun as creating a child (didn't say raising) it is natural for many people to have children.

I had children because I wanted a family. It had nothing to do with my ego. Most women have a natural need to be a mother. You don't sound like you have the need for a family and that's okay.

I can tell that you don't have children. If you do have them, then I really feel for them because it's obvious that you don't want them and can't love them.
