With my old car i had to have the handbrake cable adjusted twice in 2 years. I bought a new car in June this year and already my car is starting to roll when i put the handbrake on which obviously means i need the cable adjusting again! Is this something that just happens or do i pull the handbrake up too much when parked? How much should this cost roughly?

Thanks

The tensile steel cable in your handbrake is not perfectly elastic. each time you use it it stretches a bit more. the stress on your cable depends on the mechanical advantage built into that car model's handbrake. Use the minimum force, ie hard enough to stop any rolling, then one notch more.

On a new car, sometimes the brakes take time to wear in. On my last new car, for the first few months the handbrake tended to slip, and I had to leave the car in gear when parked on inclines. A year later, the handbrake is perfect, and I don't have to adjust it as often.

You don't usually need to adjust your handbrake cable so much, when it starts pulling up so far it is the shoes that need adjusting or replacing,so it's best to have them looked at first...good luck

Most modern cars have automatic adjusters but after only a short while the do not operate properly usually needs cleaning out and adjusting manually it takes about .75 hr Mick UK.

pick a better brake pads. the brake pads that u are using is too soft & easily worn out thats why theres a repitition of cable adjustment. on the second thought, u might be pulling up very hard on the brake lever.

it may be you just need a new hand brake cable rather then just keep tighting it!
