Is South Africa really heading the right way, or are they being sucked into the brain drain of the rest of Africa.

I honestly think SA has a very long hard road ahead of it. The apartheid era is over which is a good thing but until there is a PROPER government in place that takes care of ALL the people SA will never get out of the mess it is in. SA was a violent place during apartheid it is even worse now. After 30 years in the country I saw many changes take place, some good some bad. However, what is going on now drove me (and many many many others away) moving overseas to the UK was the best thing I very did. Living behind burglar bars, electric fences, and countless other security measures, along with the constant fear of what could and what did happen was too much. Every person I knew (friends, family, black and white) had be affect by crime... and is some cases very VIOLENT crime. I DON'T for one second miss the country. I WON'T go back if I can help it.

South Africa was the most violent place on the planet BEFORE apartheid, so its wrong to blame that on black majority rule.

I think South Africa is heading in the right direction, but like any other country it has its problems. The people of the townships have not really benefited significantly. There seems to be some corruption and tribal infighting in the political process.

However the prophets of doom, like Terreblanch have been shown to be a laughing stock. hopefully SA can become a beacon to show the way forward for the rest of the African continent

Welcome to democracy

I don't know if any of the people who have already answered have ever been to South Africa or are just believing what the media tells them...Helloooo...Yes, South Africa has its problems....SO DOES THE UK, SO DOES THE REST OF THE WORLD... South Africa is a fantastic place to live. Having said that, to answer your question about post apartheid South Africa... I do believe that a balance has not been found yet and 'they' always say that it has to get worse before it gets better... I am believing that South Africa will come out better than it ever was.. I do wish that Nelson Mandela could live forever though and run the country because he was FANTASTIC!!!! He doesn't hold a grudge about how he was treated...he just got on with the job and didn't try to separate any race, religion, sex, etc.

We'll see what happens hey..

there was a brief glimmer of hope and light back when apartheid was abolished 11 years ago. but since then, the country because of tarbo mbeki have gone slightly backwards, rather than forwards. he is holding south africa back and alas, his relationship with robert mugabe has given commentators food for thought. no wonder many people are leaving that country in their droves. however, i wouldn't give up on south africa, there is still life in that country yet- its just an issue of continually moving forwards in the right direction. yes its in a mess but there are many others in the world as messed up as south africa is right now and or in a much worse state than it is in, in stark contrast. hopefully by the time the football world cup arrives in 4 years time, it would be the perfect opportunity for the country to showcase to the world what they are capable of achieving on the global stage.

properly you ought to probable use documents really than your mate from South Africa no remember how unhappy his tale may be. Crime costs are reducing critically in South Africa today yet they did spike in the Nineteen Nineties. besides only because the white community stopped oppressing the black community did not propose that they had the wealth, skill and training to satisfy there properly placed middle class human beings in living criteria. like countless adverse and deprived parts international there's a outstanding type of crime. regularly the sufferers of those crimes are black human beings and under no circumstances privileged white human beings. they could't have adequate money protection gaurds both which shows how apartheid fairly lives on in some innovations. thankfully although their more desirable obscene privileges are lengthy previous and they ought to work out the culmination of the poverty and inequality that society became made on.

From my last visit (that will be my last visit) it has become a frightening place.
The place is full of Nigerian "con men"
The rule of law has gone and corruption is rampant.
Desmond Tutu has made a damming speech about the situation.
I did not agree with apartheid but the current situation is worse as it seems once African politicians take over they are too tribal and corrupt to have a democracy.
Look at the example of Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) it was wealthy then after Independence went to hell, the same as I fear will be the case in SA.

I'm not really well informed enough to comment generally, but one specific area that really worries me is their health service. Their minister of health has really weird, almost witch-craft based ideas that are completely out of touch with a 21st century democracy. Her denial of the causes of Aids for instance is directly contributing the misery and death for thousands. It does not bode well.
