A merchandiser needs to be the key interface between the customer and the vendor/factory. You prepare for a buying trip by examining the customer's objectives then working with your vendor base to determine the most suitable partners. If you have been given specific tech packs then you will be working to cost the garments and have countersamples ready to review when the buyer is traveling to Asia.

During the buying trips you will be working with the buyer and vendor helping to present the vendor's products, translating any customer comments and requests, helping to negotiate, and taking note of next steps.

After the buying trip you will follow up to ensure all next steps are taken. When orders are placed you will need to confirm all details in the orders are correct and work with the factory to reconfirm their capability to meet the requested costs, product, and delivery schedule.

Then afterwards you will monitor approval sampling, fitting, testing, and production right through to delivery.

Aside from this there is vendor research, trend research, fabric research, and so on- familiarizing yourself with the market.

To be successful you will need to be able to work well with people, both the customer and also keeping the vendor with you as a key partner. Also you'll need to be detail-oriented so you can track the many styles you're working with and all the comments, follow up, and status of production.

Good luck!
