Phew, excuse me while I take a breath at the overwhelming and unnecessary patriotism. By the way, how do you even know she is American?
Anyway, I'll get to my answer. People rely so heavily on spell-checks these days that they never learn spelling for themselves as the computer corrects everything for them. It's sad but it's a fact of life.
Then people go to forums, like yahoo answers, which have no spell-checks and they get picked on for making mistakes. Cruel? Maybe, depending on how their mistakes are pointed out. Necessary? If we want to prevent the further decline of the English language it is.
Aussies like me use slang (bloody oath!), Americans like most of you cut out words to save time (I handed in the essay Tuesday) and us young people, who always get a caning in the media, apparently now only talk in text form.
Mostly, we're trying to help people like you. You can only benefit from learning when you have made a mistake. It will look far better for you when you go for a job if you use correct spelling and don't apostrophise everything in sight.
And now I will sit back and wait for others to criticise my spelling and/or grammar, which they probably will.

Hey, the fact that you know that you are not a great speller means that many have commented on your spelling. I suggest that you should take it as constructive criticism. Besides if you make mistakes now, you will have a very low chance of repeating it again later.
I'm guilty of correcting people during actual conversation. Sometimes they need to know that they are doing wrong. Its better for that person to know that something is wrong than pretend that he is right.
Truth hurts but the truth will set you free.

Because spelling correctly is a sign of a caring, educated mind. Yes, many people cannot spell well, and it is great that you try, but the fact is (unfair as it may seem) that poor spellers are regarded as less intelligent than people who can spell well.

Yes, I am guilty of correcting people's spelling.....but it doesn't really bother me as much as when people use abbreviated spelling so you can't understand what they are going on about.
Words like sum, da, using z instead of s, caps.....so irritating!!!

Because we learn from mistakes. If we make spelling mistakes and nobody tells us, then we'll never know it. Take heart and accept it.

As Americans we want to strive for perfection, this is why we're the strongest and most powerful country on earth and one of the youngest...You should also strive for that same perfection and always be the best you can be. You can attain any level of achievement you wish, overcome adversity and reach for the stars.............
