yes just dig them up and split them as reynwater said .
but unless you live in extraordinary conditions , i wouldn't be fertilising them !! they can become quite feral , and almost weed like . i have a number of varieties ( alpinia , which you speak of , coral shell etc , ) but once they take over to much area I've got to dig them up and chuck them .
I'm in north Queensland --- and if you can tee up quarantine movements --- i can send you some rhizomes too !!! ( but i don't seriously think that would be possible ) any how good luck .

You can cut them apart with a sharp knife for transplanting elsewhere. (Send me some!! I could send you an Excell list, we can trade?) They will come back being perennials in the spring. MiracleGro is my fertilizer of choice. You can mix it strong (1 Tablespoon per gallon) for bi weekly fertilizing, or weak (1/4 teaspoon per gallon) for watering (everything) each time you water.
