i hear people say that the sport has changed so much and the players are soft. i don't think that is accurate. just look at players who retired early because of the games toughness eg.. terell davis, marshal faulk, robert smith-mn vikes (he had both ankles and knees reconstructed multiple times.). the rules have changed because the game has evolved with its players. yeah i think bret favre may not have achieved so much without new rules. he is a really good qb (may be the best of his time). but not better than bart star, fran tarkinton or jim mcmahon. i would much rather have him on my team (the vikes) but before he leaves he will get used up by greenbay. just like the bears used up jim mcmahon before he bounced around. its different today, back in the day of the purple gang, steel curtain, fred "da hamma" everytime two teams took the field it was a war. karl eller made it his personal mission to take out star and most of the time star could remember his phone number afterwar

Not by a long shot. The reason the rules have changed especially when it comes to protecting the quarterback has been the play of linebackers and defensive ends. They are bigger, stronger and much faster than their predecessors. However, I do feel the rule changes have gone too far in that roughing the quarterback at times is a 'joke.'
This is nothing new in that I remember back in the seventies Jack Lambert made the comment that quarterbacks should wear dresses.

Man do you need a history lesson.
First of all Marshall Faulk is not retired. He's on IR and looking to make a comeback next season.
Secondly to compare Brett Favre to Jim Mcmahon is just ridiculous. Jim Mcmahon wasn't even a good QB little low one of the greatest of all time (I.E BRETT FAVRE)

The rule changes have definitely helped the QB's.
I'm still not really sure what your question is

yeah they are still tough,
But I wouldn't say that they are tougher than
The greats of the past I mean Ray Nitsche, Chuck Bednarik,
Bob Lilly, Dick Butkis, Deacon Jones, Jim Otto, Jim Brown,
Those men were crazy tough, The kind of guys that would eat their own guts and ask for seconds.
And not one of them ever made a million dollars a year, playing football

According to Jim Brown they are. Just look at how they let Tomlinson "have" his first td against the Broncos the other night. He didn't even cross the goal line and they just gave it to him, so he wouldn't have to take another hit trying to ACTUALLY cross the line.

Compared to the "old school NFL"...probably, but they're still tough guys to play pro football.

Well...except most kickers.
