I mean, what if some totally unexpected hypercool supercar comes out in 2007... the disaster would be HUGE! HUGE, I TELL YOU!
But seriously, seems a bit weird to choose the car of the year 2007 in 2006. So why?

Because most 2007 models hit the dealerships in August or September of 2006. That's been standard practice for decades.

It used to be that the manufacturers jealously kept their new models secret until the unveiling of the new models. Every manufacturer revealed them on the same day. You'd see car haulers going down the road with tarps over the cars, and they'd be stored at the dealers behind locked fences with the tarps in place. People would flood the dealerships on the model release date to get a look at the new models and be the first on their block to own one.

Because the cars for sale right now are 2007's. The car of the year next year will be a 2008.
