The days of "Rule Britannia" have long since past, at least since WW II and the ensuing collapse of the British Empire. Since that time, they have not produced a leader who could command the world's stage, and no one is going to give Britain the backing you suggest. A force for good? It is hard to imagine that enslaving the Chinese with opium, and the rest of the story of the Empire, is grounds for expecting anything good to come of another chance. And look at how the US is doing with its power. Somehow we need to diminish this power game all over the world and stop the few from messing with the lives of the many.

We had to surrender our "preferred trading partner" status with commonwealth countries when our illustrious leaders lied us into joining the EU. But the commonwealth still exists. What's wrong with South African Wine, New Zealand Lamb and Canadian Bacon (amongst about four zillion other things).
Now all we've got is frackin' immigrants who don't speak the language and have a constitutional right to claim benefits.

I'm afraid not. Being a club of former colonial masters and the colonised, the best it can do is probably what it is doing now. World power headed by whom? The British PM, the PM of its most populuos state or one elected by all members? Just think of the present day UN and you will not be far from an answer.
