I have downloaded Spyware Doctor and it has scanned my computer and found 219 infections :-
1. Error Safe Free
2. Tracking Cookies
3. Advertising
4. Driver Cleaner
5. Affiliated with Browser Hackers
6. Known Bad Sites
7. Hotbars
8. Common Components for WinSoftwear

Please help. This all sounds like double dutch to me. I have no idea what this means. My question really is should I purchase Spyware Doctor to remove these and protect my computer in the future. Or does anyone know of something better.

I am a very very new computer user and don't have any idea re viruses etc.

It is very good but there are free programs that will remove all that stuff. Run an anti virus and an anti spyware in safe mode. I'd use either AVG or Avast anti virus, and Spybot Search and Destroy plus AVG anti spyware.
You must run them in safe mode!

(You may need to switch off System Restore as back up files will be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.)
To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

You need to install one firewall.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.

You need to install one anti virus;
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ -AVG anti virus or
http://www.avast.com - Avast Antivirus

You need all three anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Also use Microsoft Defender and their online scans.

And these are useful utilities;

Winpatrol is a handy utility that tracks cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

I have a friend which was in your shoes a long time ago. He had his PC crawling with spyware and dangerous programs. We installed Ad-Aware SE Personal and Spybot S& D which found about 50 traces. We cleaned them. But the computer basically remained the same.

We then decided to try Spyware Doctor. When we scanned the pc with the trial version it found about 500 infections. After some thinking, we came to a point to purchase it. My friend purchased it online and after he ran a scan, it found the same 500 infections. To our great amazement, Spyware Doctor cleaned everything and ever since he has been using it, he has never had a problem with spyware. It also has Real-Time Protection.

So my advice is that you purchase Spyware Doctor because it is very good and genuine. And undoubtely, better than Ad-Aware SE Personal or Spybot S & D. The only program that comes really close to Spyware Doctor is Webroot Spy Sweeper, but it has the tendency of locking up your pc at times.

I've found that using ad-aware, and zone alarm are my best bet.
Both have a free version that have worked very very well for me, But you can upgrade if you wish to the pro versions, for a reasonable price.
