Here's the article, in case you're interested- http://uk.news.yahoo.com/13122006/356/free-cash-machines-poor-areas.html

So what do you think? To me it seems a bit pointless, as major banks do not charge usually, and if I see one of those charging atms, half the time I just wait until I can get to the main bank's atm.
So cash machines were all free, then these 'bandit' machines which charge started popping up, now they're going to make them free as well. What's caused this?

If you youself haven't been poor, then it'll be har for you top unerstand.

You see, you're informed and you kno fully well that many banks do not charge for transactions.

But if you're poor, an live off of governemnt aid, a child support check, or a minium wage (or worse) job... you don't really have time to get informed, or the motivation. The only feeling you have is surviving from check to check, not saving up, so, if you think or overhear that an ATM costs 1 dollar, 2 dollars per transaction, (or quid, whatever), then you'll avoi them. I mean, using your atm card even once a week meanings 4-8 ollars a month, which is a meal and possible an hour's wages, when it's already tough enough.

If you know for a fact there's free ATMs an cash machines, then you'lre more liekly to use it, an more likely to get in the habit of keeping money in the bank instea of in your pocket, or mattress... or porcelain pig.

Some people kept all thier money on an ATM card and the fees aded up over time, then they sword it off... I mean, only so many or certain transactions are free.

Yes tbh. I went to a "poorish" area the other day and the shopping area there. Was shocked that the only cash machine around was a £1 charger.

Further.. they only tell you about the charge after you'd gone through all the palava of putting in your pin and stating the money you wanted to withdraw. Should be a big sign on charge ATMs to see before you put your card in.

Anyway... the charging cash machines make more from the poor that the rich imo - which is unfair.

I agree with putting fee free cash machines in poor areas but why only there? Why penalise the better off?
In my village there is one cash machine and it charges so you actually have to go to the nearest town to get cash out which for some isn't easy. Also a lot of places these days don't do cashback and in most places you have to spend a minimum amount if you're paying by card.
Fee charging cash machines should be abolished everywhere.

I'm supposing it's because the government decided everyone receiving state benefits, including pensions and disability payments had to have their money paid directly into bank accounts a couple of years ago. £2.50 a time for withdrawing a small amount of money is a bit steep for those that can't afford it. I know my parents have to have their pension paid into a bank account and had no choice in the matter, so I think it's fair that poorer areas with a higher percentage of people on benefits should have greater access to free ATM's.

Poor areas don't need free cash machines. They need incentives and a plan to get people off their fat bone-idle backsides and into work. Post info sheets describing how contraception works through their doors and issue them with the local job vacancies. Poor areas my ****.
They can afford reebok trainers so why should i have to pay 1.50 to get cash and they don't.
This country has become a joke. And everyone is laughing at us.
