Any force applied to a perfectly round shape is distributed evenly throughout the entire surface of the circle.
The better picture the distribution of weight on a piece of paper draw two concentric circles (same center different radius), these will represent the tunnel walls.
Now draw lines through he circles and passing through the center to divide the walls into slices. If you push a single piece of the wall you will notice that it can't pass through into the interior without first displacing the pieces on either side, and those can't move without first displacing the pieces on their sides, and so on.
So the force applied is evenly distributed around the entire circle, in order for it to collapse enough force would have to be applied so that after distributing the force enough pressure remains to cause a section to fail.
