You do not need to write to them to cancel your contract. If you are out of contract, all you need to do is phone them up and ask for your PAC code. This is the code allocated in order for you to take your number to another provider. You have 30 days in which to make sure you "port" your number over, otherwise it reverts to your previous contract, and you have to go through the process again.
O2 are notoriously appalling in the customer service department, and will frequently tell bare-faced-lies in order to cover themselves. They told me that they couldn't transfer my call internally - which must be a lie as thye are a telecommunications company. Plus if they couldn' transfer me, it doesn't say much for their technology! What you can do is report them to OfCom - but they will tell you that they don't cover the mobile providers. You can always write a letter of complaint to O2's customer services director - his name is Vivek Dev - but I didn't tell you!

You can do both. I always give a verbal cancellation, even with O2. Did you send the letters via recorded delivery? If so, then you have proof and you can claim the money they took from you back from them.

You can get cheap new phones from here. They are part of the carphonewarehouse group and very cheap.

If you read the small print on your contract it will tell you what is acceptable.
This is usually in writing giving 30 days notice and i would suggest you send it by registered post.
Phoning them (get a contact name) and following this up with a letter means that you have fulfilled your side of the contract, you could cancel any DD after this date.

its better to make a letter. We have the same problem. We call the mobile company that we want to cancel our contract but unfortunetly we are not granted because our contract takes two years. So we don't have any choice just pay it for two years without the phone. We order a phone on-line and they say we just pay monthly but when we get the phone in the post office we need to pay the whole value of the phone. And now we learn our mistakes not to get phones on-line.We must get one only to authorized phone dealer. And we are paying monthly for nothing.

i've cancelled mobile contracts with orange and 3 and they've always accepted it verbally but i needed to give one months notice. Write a letter to 02 complaints department and send it recorded delivery. Phone them the next day to check they've received it . also look up on the internet there is a watchdog that you can report them to if they do not deal with your complaint satisfactorily but you will need to get in touch with o2's complaints dept first. also, be careful not paying them, you could end up having a default on your credit record and will have difficulty getting a new mob contract

You have to write to them to cancel the contract, i had this problem i wrote to them and it didn't get cancelled in 30 days so i went to my bank and cancelled the direct debit then they can't take any money.

How about this go to your service provider if they have a store where you bought the phone from and you will be ablel to cancel it there but you will have to pay a cancellation fee if our contract is not up yet.

Usually, you'll need to send your request in writing. Faxing works too.

Best thing to do: send your letter via registered post. It does cost a bit more but is worth it.

Also, record all your phone conversations with the customer support. And ask them to repeat their names. It gets things moving faster when you let them know that you'd recorded the entire previous conversation with rep XYZ.

you have to give 30 days notice and then your contract should end provided you have had the contract for the agreed length of time ie 12 months or so, they should do this easily if you phone them.

Do both and in the case of writing a letter send it by Recorded Delivery.
