My husband recently got a job working at a smoked salmon factory. Whenever I was his work clothes, which is usually 3 times back to back, the smell of the smokey fish remains in the fabric.
My question is what can I do to get rid of the salmon smell from his clothes?

Try washing them in a vinegar wash first, then wash them with detergent. Unfortunately, with the "smoked" process, it is very pungent, and once it attacks fibers, it's hard to get it out, just like if your home burns, and your clothes are effected by the smoke, hard to get that out. Drycleaners do offer services for smoke removal, however, could be expensive!

Wow. There are some things you can try. Vinegar is probably your best bet. However, it takes time. Not time to remove the smell, but time for you to be stuck smelling vinegar. The fish smell will go away long before the vinegar. Just soak the clothes is a bucket, sink, whatever, of straight vinegar. Beware, it will stink! Rinse extremely well, and wash! If you can rotate clothing he wears, and the buckets, I would develop some sort of a cycle so that he always has cleans clothes and you always have a nose that can still smell anything other than vinegar.I hope this works. Good luck!

Add lemon juice concentrate. 1/4 cup per load. This was my grandma's way of removing unwanted smells. A bit expensive for every day washing.
There are also industrial deodorizer addatives for carpet cleaning that you could try.
You may also try "nilodor" which you can get at any drug or grocery store.
If this doesn't work you may want to get him a few sets of coveralls for work and keep them in plastic bags as to isolate the smell from the rest of the house. An occasional few drops of nilodor in the bags will help too.

My boyfriend works on airplanes. His clothes constantly smells of diseal gas and all those other lovley chemicals..
I usually add some color-safe clorox to the load, as well as about a 1/2 cup baking soda..
Baking soda is a great odor absorber (it also gets grease stains out.... )...
Good luck!

This is the one and only solution for you,"Boraxo". You know, the one with the twenty mule team? It's also called borateam. It's a laundry netralizer, and helps to brighten colors, and whiten whites! Also I would hang them on the clothsline in the sun. That makes clothes smell real good. Bye

It is an oil based smell problem just like my teenagers greasy taco smelling uniforms. I washed them with hot water and dish soap (Palmolive original green) and then I could hang them in the closet without everything else smelling like a greasy taco.

I would try adding baking soda and vinegar to the washing machine when washing his clothes. It works wonders on my dog's bed.
