Ignoring individual features, the iPod is simply just another MP3 player. Just as a Porche or a Prius are simply automobiles at the end of the day.

The iPod just happens to be the #1 name in MP3 players currently; depending on who you ask, because of its look & simplicity of operation, or because of the iTunes software used to transfer songs to it.

(lester's comment is incorrect, iPods can play mp3 files obtained from other sources, as well as import (through the iTunes software) your own CDs. What it can't play are WMA files that "other" online music stores usually sell; though you can probably find utilities to convert them into MP3 format.)

An iPod is just an overpriced MP3 player - some of the newer ones can do other things like play videos too, but there are other brands which also make players that do that, like Creative.

An iPod will only work with iTunes which can be a bit funny with uploading your own CDs (I personally think it's one of the poorer software interfaces available for MP3s).

A generic MP3 player is basically a storage device which has a speciality in storing and playing back large quantities of music - you can use it for storing data files too.

The Sony ones can use a slightly different type of compression system, ATRAC, which allows you to put more music onto the player.

Each has its quirk - decide what you want it to do and pop to Currys or Dixons - they should be able to help you with the main specs.

knowitall's answer is perfect. the ipod is just another mp3 player, but , it's just that it's so hyped that the ipod seems to have created another class for itself. one more thing, the ipod video is an mp4 player because mp3 players can't hold videos.

one more thing, just becase the ipod supports various formats (AAC, MP3 etc), it doesn't mean that plain mp3 players hold only the mp3 format. it's just a name because mp3 is the best format to store music in as it allows the size of the audio file to be reduced without reducing much sound quality which is exactly what an mp3 player needs.
