Always best to go out on a high, and what could be better than doing it for your nation?

Because major tournaments are the culmination of almost two years of work with a group of players. After the World Cup or the Euro Championships, national teams usually bring in new players. As such, a lot of older players usually retire after the competitions because they probably won't have their same skills in another two years, when the next major tournament takes place.

I think you might be asking the wrong question. Many players retire from international play after winning a world cup, but still go on to play club soccer for quite a while. Some of the biggest examples are Luis Figo (retired Portugal, plays Inter Milan), Paolo Maldini retired from the national team but played more than a few more seasons with AC Milan.

Because that's the heighest of the highs. Every player dreams of representing thier country in a World Cup, then of winning it. When they did that, what else is there to do. This is why i think Beckham should retire.

He played for one of the biggest clubs in the world
He won the EPL, FA Cup and Champion's League in one year
He played in 3 ( i think) world cups.
It's time to hang up the booths.

I'd have to go with David Beckham, because he's the closest thing to a girl in the tourney :) Only joking David - as long as you bring the trophy home! I'm guessing svk is referring to Theo Walcott, the young half-caste player. England fans only, check out this link for 3 lions car graphics...

Basically

The same goes for sportsman at the olympics for example - Steve Redgrave.
