I would take a 55 gal. drum and poke holes in the bottom.
Then I would put layers of material (in order) in the drum: small rocks, cloth (single layer - cottons best), sand, cloth (single layer), charcoal, cloth (single layer), sand, small rocks.
Fill the barrel at least half way up with these layers.
Making sure to have several inches of charcoal.
Fill with water.
Catch what runs out.

You could also do this with charcoal and dirt, charcoal and straw, etc.
