I'm looking for a Christmas present for my dad, I want to get him a gift certificate, in order for him to buy the tools he needs for his woodworking shop. He is extremely gifted at making anything out of wood and usually will only buy the best. I have no idea which brandname is the best or which store or catalog would be the best. Please help if you can. Christmas is coming very soon.

It depends on what type of woodworking he does. There are many, many brands of different tools out there. To each his own. You could try this link. They have an online store and alot of very fine products to choose from. Maybe a gift certificate from a place like this and he can pick out what he needs or wants. Good Luck.

Hello, I am an avid woodworker and from the list of tools you mentioned it looks as if your husband likes power tools. If he really likes woodworking you can't get the same results with power tools that you can with hand tools. One tool that is sort of more for collecting then using, even though I do use mine is a Stanley No. 45 planer. They were originally made in the late 1800's to make mouldings. The tools can now be found on eBay and usually need a little help getting them back to 100% The good thing is if he likes hand tools and he likes to fix things, you may have the perfect gift! Just one thing to keep in mind, unless your husband is good with working metal, make sure you get the No.45 with all of the moulding attachments (blades), without them and without metal working experience the tool is useless! If he knows how to work with meal he can make his own moulding blades. To give you an idea of prices to look for, one that is in bad shape will run you about $20 and one that is almost perfect may run you about $100+. The whole plane itself has 80+ parts but the main parts are the planer, the guide assembly and the blades. I hope this helps. Happy Holidays

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

check out Rockler for "fine" woodworking tools..

Hand tools? or Power tools?

I tend to buy stanley, or vaughan, stanley has a good assortment and variety of tools, Sears Craftsmans is good stuff.

For Bench power tools look at Jet, Grizzly, Ridgid or Rockwell. Portable Power tools, Milwaukee, Portacable, Dewalt, Bosch (Bosch being the choice)

Tools I would recommend are Porter Cable, DeWalt, Delta, Milwaukee, Craftsman.

Stores that I would recommend are Sears, Home Depot, Menards.

Catalogs would be the Craftsman tools catalog or Sears. They have several brands besides Craftsman.
