n means neutral and how much does it cost to have it checked usually?

its a 91 camry. and i had this problem right after an oil change.

take out the cover of the shifter, you can see a cable connected to the shifter, the usual problem is that the synchronize is out, unhooked the cable from the shifter use force to pull the cable out (normal its the last position of the gear eg. 2 or Low) now put the shifter to the last gear, connect back the cable to the shifter. it should do the work. check back if still encountering problem.

it really depends on what make and model the car is because if its older than the linkage for the trans is off and its not that hard to fix all you have to do is slide under the car and look on trans there should a rod coming out with a bolt on it just adjust it or have it adjusted if its a new one then the linkage is a cable and it will have to be adjust by a professional its not real expensive to have fixed nether
