it means that we normally think that those that are mad are in the minority but what if we are the mad ones and they are in fact the sane ones??
Just bcz you are in the majority does not make you right or sane etc etc.
A great example of this is Nazism, or genocide etc.
this quote makes you look at yourself and society and re-evaluate it and its own values and its fingerpointing "your crazy" ways! Sometimes we should point the finger at ourselves or society.
For if you think about it there is no such thing as madness but just difference and different ways of thinking. Do not always discard the opinion of the supposed "stupid, mad, marganilised etc..... they may in fact have a much healthier "saner"/moral/clever view of the world than you and may even in fact be to early for their time a perfect example would be leonardo da vinci --- his ideas, inventions etc were too early for their time but he was latter proved right and now he is reckonised as a genius. Who knows which geniuses we are currently labelling as "mad, stupid etc etc" which will later be proved right or admired etc... so think twice before you think that the norm is so great :) :) Hope this helps..!

In a mad world everybody is mad. So,madness is the general accepted state of mind in a mad world. Thus, in a mad world, the people we would call mad are taken to be sane by the society, whereas, the people we normally take to be sane are considered as mad. Its like an upsidedown world, where the sane are considered to be mad, while the insane are accepted as sane.

If everything that surrounds your reality is crazy, chaotic, and just plain nuts, then the tables are turned from what we expect "normal" to be. So, in a normal world, normal people are considered sane, it would stand to figure that in a crazy world, the crazy people are the only ones who know what's going on. Hence, the crazy are the sane ones in a crazy world.

Well, if all of society is just following what is socially acceptable - AND what is socially acceptable thinking and behaviour is actually INSANE... like.. hmmm killing over religion, hating because of colour... and so on.

Then the people who defer from the main group of society are seen as CRAZY.. and they are not "normal" or following anyone but they don't believe in bad things or irrational things that many of society thinks is right ... then THEY actually are the ones who are SANE and not the bulk of society (the followers who don't think they just accept what they are told is true).

would ever anyone acknowledge madness...look at the world its condition its rules...its ruled by injustice, cruelty & greed....try doing good & u would be opposed by the rulers of war & distress in the fake name of justice, religion, need .....hav u tried making sence?in those aspect...its a mad bad world baby....try make sence & u would be called MAD, CRAZY, ABSURD & that ur thinking never to happen...always anywhere easy way out is the wrong way...so the ones world tag Mad r the ones who make most sence & dare to go against the taboo...to unveil the pains & dark side of society...
so the ones who r Mad r the sanest of all..in this mad world...
its a kind of sarcasm....

Everything is relative. If almost everyone were insane, it would be the sane ones who would seem crazy.

Myself for example: I am a Buddhist, (read weak atheist), and an anarchist. I see a world of hungry ghosts who in their insanity (cognitive dissonance) will confabulate the fantastic to continue on their path.

Everyone is different, and sanity is conforming to the norms of society. so insanity is the opposite of sanity. Which brings you to the point that if every one is different than everyone is sane.
