As other posters have noted, we have no clue as to what your body frame is like. I'll share my experiences; I was engaged, though the wedding didn't go through (my choice), and found several excellent gowns without going too far.

To give an idea about my frame, I'm 5'8, 145-147 lbs, depending on the time of the month. My body is primarily in my shoulders, hips, and thighs. I did very well with Vera Wang, Monique Lhullier, and Lillie Rubin. Vera Wang and Monique Lhullier will easily start around $3800. Be very careful about eBay and other sales -- alterations could have changed the dress beyond usability (either due to the size or the crap work of a bad seamstress).

I did see quite a variety of styles among both of those designers, but the best fit for me was the Vera Wang. The dresses I tried on would have required very little alteration, and mostly just to take in the bust a bit.

In fact, the dress I got was a Lillie Rubin (on sale for $250)-- cream silk, completely beaded, with beaded straps. Again, it needed just a tiny adjustment in the bust, but it's beautiful, and I feel fabulous in it. Ankle-length, no other frills, aside from the beads. Matching shawl and shoes for a total of $170, very easily found at Nordstrom's and other department stores. It doesn't look like a traditional wedding gown (poofy and bustled and whatever), but I can wear the entire ensemble for white-tie events, so the money's well worth it.

And, yes, I still adore the ensemble, even after calling off the wedding!

The best is to design it just for you.
KEEP IN MIND - If there will be dancing at your wedding you want to be the center of attention, so make sure your dress is not the reason you have to keep off the dance floor. In other words - make it comfortable and ja... when people wee you they sould be not only blown away but they should say - that was so like her...

You need to find one that suits your body type.
This answer won't be the same for everyone.
If you have large arms don't wear a sleeveless dress.
If you are a tiny framed person you may want something that makes you appear to have more of a figure.
If you are a bigger framed person you want to have something that will take away from the bulges.
You know what I mean!!
More info is necessary on your body type in order to answer this question.
If you go to a reputable Bridal Shop and get an associate who you get a good feeling from (one who's not in it for the comissions), she should be able to help you out with this.
Congrats!

your wedding dress should be what really fits you and what you feel comfortable wearing. you shouldn't wear spagetti or tube because it's in vogue or because is what your friends want you to wear.
