I would agree with overheating. You might wanna clear some dust out with can o air from your computer. If it is clean then you might want to invest in a fan or two.

There could be several reasons for this.

1. A critical software error that caused the system to completely stop functioning. In this case, the error was most likely a fluke and probably won't happen again. But this is a very unlikely reason.

2. Your power source is failing. If your computer's power source is failing, then it would shut itself off whenever the connection is interrupted. If this is the case, it will keep happening, and you'll have to replace the power source to fix the problem.

3. Your electrical outlet is failing. If the outlet is failing or overheating, it would automatically cut off power to anything plugged into it to prevent a fire. Plug something else into it that draws a lot of power and see if the same thing happens.

4. You're drawing too much power for the circuit box to handle (but not enough to trip the breakers), or an electrical wire inside your wall or circuit box has failed.

5. Something is overheating in your system, such as the processor. This would cause and immediate shutdown to prevent system damage and/or a fire. Make sure your system has plenty of ventilation all around the tower.

6. A program is shutting the computer down. This is again unlikely, as any program that is legitimate would prompt you to shut your system down. But it is possible.

7. The electrical outlet has a wall switch that controlls it. Find the prankster in your family that keeps switching it on and off and smack him or her upside the head.

I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems.
Some drive problems can be easily fixed by yourself using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.

As long as nothing else went out in your house, (ie it was a blackout) i would say it is overheating. If it didn't turn straight on i would say it was the processor that was overheating.
