Mouse/mice comes from anglo saxon Mus of which plural was Mys therefore mice
House in Anglo Saxon was Hus as in the Headmans, Leaders, Elders Hus as opposed to normal huts, but as the large house was generally not grouped together with others there was no known plural.

because mice scare elephants. houses do not scare elephants, unless of course it is a house in the shape of a mouse. that would scare an elephant.

all the words of the English dictionary have to do with elephants, if you search each of them carefully, you will begin to notice this.

(for example, why does grey rhyme with elephant? because elephants are grey. why does pray rhyme with grey when elephants are not religious? it's a huge debate.)

Yes it is strange the English language. I wanted more than one trout when I went to buy some fish.I couldn't ask for two trouts so I asked for a brace of trite which the fishmonger immediately understood. Funny language English!!

Language is full of irregularities like that. The reason is that it has evolved over a very long time. Efforts to make language simpler or more uniform (like Esperanto) have failed.

It's annoying dude, but you'll have to live with it.

I completely agree with you......it irritates me sometimes about the English Language. Why is it so darn complicated?
Why do we write know with a 'silent k', if is that silent -get rid of it!

Try teaching and explaining to a child why these words aren't spelt as they sound.
