My laptop has no serial port and I need to console onto a nokia firewall. I want some nifty way to use hyperterminal (or other software) to console out via my network port (which is connected to the serial interface on the nokia)

There are USB>serial converters. You can't use your network port unfortunately.

Use a USB-to-Serial adaptor.

There's some driver software on a CD.

It configures a USB port as a serial (COM) port.

I use one on my Vaio which has no COM port. Very useful.

It's also used on four other laptops in my work.

Get a USB to serial convertor instead. While there are ethernet to serial adaptors, one will cost you more than your computer did.
