The oil looks good. All ports were plugged during storage. Will there be any rust issues inside. What steps should I take to "revive" this engine. It has a mild performance package (pistons, cam..etc). The block was taken out of a 1975 Caprice. Engine was installed into a 86 Monte SS. Started it up for the first time and there is a knocking sound near the front of the engine. It is not the typical rod/lifter knocking sound. Is it possible that the oil/filter and possibly oil pump needs to be replaced. Would the oil thicken up over that long of a period and not circulate properly through the engine. Any suggestions or advice? 400 sbc blocks are rare so I would like to save the engine if possible.

yes if u never ajusted the valves it should be good but if u did and let them set in one position for so many years they can weakin and need to be tested or replaced

even if the 400 small block was rebuilt it did sit up for quit a while so the seals all need to be replaced and gaskets will probably also need replacing just tear the motor back down and put a small rebuild kit in will cost about 150 for the kit. while you have it tore down look at everything and check that its ok send your heads off and have them reworked cost about 200 and the performance kit that's in it should be just fine

If it wasn't properly "pickled" for long-term storage, it's probably toast. A complete tear-down is needed. It probably can be salvaged, but another rebuild will be required.
