My son wants to grow some crystals and I am keen to encourage him.

When I was a lad you could buy Cobalt Chloride from the chemist - these days they look at you as if you have asked for some moon dust.

I don't want to go buy a kit - I want to show him it is pretty simple. Where can I buy compounds for crystal growing here in the UK?

HI, you could try this with ordinary sugar also.
All you need to do is, boil some water,
put some in to a beaker or cup, Put a few table spoons of sugar
and disolve it and with maybe a button on an end of some string, hang this in the water, leave it go cold.
The only thing with this, you will need to reheat the solution a nice few times, add a bit more sugar each time to see a result. On the Button, you should see sugar crystals forming on it.
Did this is science class.

you can try copper sulphate, aluminium sulphate (alum) or potassium permanganate, all available from any chemists. cream of tartar also crystalises as do salt and sugar.
you need to "seed" your solution with a crystal of chosen solute to catalyse your crystal growing fun! see which ones grow the fastest!
