I have seen both. My persona experience is that psychiatrists only care about money and are very cold and detached. All they are there for is to give your prescriptions. Psychologists are all about talking to people and helping them deal with their problems in a healthy way. I think you could do more good as a psychologist because I have gained nothing from psychiatrist, except my meds.

Depends on what exactly how much school you want to complete and how much money you want to spend. Do you want to attend medical school and go through residency, etc. Then be a Psychiatrist. Want to focus more on cognitive theories of the mind than on the biological aspect, than go for a doctorate in Psychology. Keep in mind too, with special degrees, some Psychologist CAN prescribe medication, so to do so you do not necessarily need to become a Psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes with mental health. A Psychologist studies the human mind on a cognitive matter.

Well, I think if you're willing to go the distance, you should hang on and get your MD, and become a psychiatrist. It seems the most versatile degree, and you will always be able to reimburse through billing insurance. The MD adds a credential that is valued. Plus, if you ever find you dislike the field, you can always focus on a different form of medicine. If you really want the challenge, after you finish the MD, go on and journey toward becoming a psychoanalyst. That seems to combine the best of all worlds. Good luck!

It all depends what you want to do, really.
A psychiatrist has some training in medicine and can prescribe drugs. You are more likely to find work in a psychiatric institution and work with more difficult cases (i.e. cases of true mental illness).
Psychologists stay strictly above the shoulders, so to speak. They know therapeutic methods and study the human minds. You could work in schools, private practice, companies. They are also used in marketing study and the like.
of course, both can pursue academic careers.

They do different things. A psychologist will do counseling where a psychiatrist is mainly there to do an assessment of you and to prescribe medications if you need it. An apt with a psychologist would last an hour, an apt with a psychiatrist would last maybe twenty minutes.

Psychiatrists are MD's. They go through medical school. They deal more with medication and the chemical imbalances. They do more diagnoses of mental illnesses. They can perscribe medications
Pshchologists deal more in behavior and counseling. They can't prescrib medications. They have much less education than a Psychitrist. They do more talk therapy and practical advice in their practice.
Notice medicine and pshyhology arn't exact sciences.

A psychologist is really mostly an analyst/therapist whereas a psychiatrist resorts to medication for patient treatment

A psychologist studies the human psychy and can treat people through counselling. A psychyatrist treats people with mental disorders by administering (usually) drugs. You need to deside if you want to help peaople resolve their issues, or peddle pills.
