Depending on where your from your christmas dinner can be anything from ham, roast beef or even a nice goose. Although at one time turkeys were so cheap that when people bought a turkey at Thanksgiving they would also pick one up for Christmas as well.

It isn't always turkey for Christmas. Some people have ham or a really special cut of beef.

In Victorian England, goose was traditional Christmas dinner. In Hispanic families, tamales are traditional.
Why turkey? Someone decided to serve it and everyone else followed suit. I've met people who eat ham, prime rib or steaks, pizza, etc. The options are endless. If you don't want to serve or eat turkey, fix something you do like instead.

Advertising. Turkey farmers only have this season to move their product in large, industrial quantities.
However, it's ham for me. Or the "Traditional Christmas Pizza" (OK, it's a tradition, I've been trying to get started.)

We never have turkey. The main stays of our Christmas dinner are ham and chocolate.
Oh and cheese too. The one shaped like a ball. I almost forgot that.

I suspect it's like so many things here - it's an import from America, although why, I'll never know. It must be the driest, blandest poultry ever, and, like the "Grumpy Old Men" i use it as nothing but something to put the bloody cranberry sauce (another American import!) on. I'll stick for a nice bit of decently cooked chicken any day, AND we won't still be eating it a fortnight later.

It doesn't have to be.My family don't eat turkey,so we'll have a joint of some sort,;like Beef,Pork or a nice shoulder of Lamb.
There's a lot of different meats out there,Venison,Kangaroo, just to name.
Turkey's are easy to breed, that's why there's always so many in shops and butchers.
