Its probably just a curropted driver in the OS. All you have to do then is to go to control panel>System>Hardware>Device manager> and right click to uninstall the USB drivers.
In the same window, Right click on your system icon and select Scan for hardware changes... this will re-install the drivers again.
Do remember to check if you accidentally disabled the USB port in your BIOS/CMOS...

usually when a USB device is unable to be detected it means your computer does NOT have a driver loaded for that device. when you purchase your device, it should come with a CD, this will have all the software you need to run the usb device. Since usb is a Plug N Play technology, all you should have to do is have the driver loaded, if it doesnt' work after that, the problem becomes more complex, corrupted system files, hardware problems...etc, but just load the drivers from the CD, or download the drivers from the manufacturers website and you should be fine.

have you tried using this device on a different machine?? if it's your thumb-drive, they DO FAIL sometimes, which will give you that message ( I GOT IT WITH MY LAST DRIVE ). If the device does work on another machine your controller chip for USB could be bad, try plugging in a USB mouse or keyboard (if they work, then your controller is OK) the drivers for USB should not be a problem since the USB drivers are DEFAULT loaded by your WINDOWS (ie it's a standard driver not specific to any computer that is installed with windows) if usb mouse and/or keyboard work, and your device works on another computer... then i have NO IDEA, however if your device works on another computer and a different USB device DOESN't work on your computer then i'd say you need a PCI USB expansion card (you can pick one up at your local computer store for like $20-30) if you have any questions contact me

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
