Read books! I'm an avid reader and when I came to the US as an exchange student, quite a few people were surprised to learn English wasn't my native language. My vocabulary was much greater than a that of a friend of mine who'd already been there an entire year.

Play lots of Scrabble, Do Crossword Puzzles, Read the dictionary, write lots, and check the spelling and meanings of anything your not totally sure of in the dictionary when you do.
There are pocket dictionaries, like the Collins English Gem Dictionary. Carry one with you. It will fit in a pocket.
Practice, the more you use a word the better you remember it.
Rhymes or phrases, like; here - hear
HERE is wHERE you are
hEAR you do with an EAR
Happy word hunting.

Read challenging books (in a genre you enjoy) and have a dictionary handy to look up any words you aren't familiar with.

Having context for the words makes them easier to understand, and understanding them makes it a lot easier to remember them.
