I remember when I first met my husband we were out on our 6th or 7th date (I guess where you THINK you are comfortable enough to sing in front of them) and I was singing: Take me down to the very last city, where the grass is green and the girls are pretty. He was like What did you just say? Well, I guess I learned the true words to Paradise City that night and it's been a running joke ever since! BUT there is a term for when you misunderstand lyrics to a song........and it's not parody...........what is it?

It's called a Mondegreen. The author Sylvia Wright coined the term in an article in Harper's Bazaar in 1954 called "The Death of Lady Mondegreen."

It stems from a poem that her mother read to her as a child that she misheard.

Ye Highlands and ye Lowlands,
Oh, where hae ye been?
They hae slain the Earl Amurray, [sic]
And Lady Mondegreen.

The actual words were "And laid him on the green."

Usually called Twisted Lyrics round here.
For a good giggle have a look at which has hundreds. It's named after the Hendrix song where he seems to say "'scuse me, while I kiss this guy".

I'm still trying to work out a Corrs song [Give me a Reason] which goes
"I'm feeling weak so -
I'll make you a sausage......" ????

I think what you're referring to are "misheard lyrics." There are tons of sites about them on the net... just Google "misheard lyrics."
