There are many fields you can study that are related to police work, so it all depends on what your ultimate personal goal is. But in general, studying something like criminal justice or homeland security would be directly related and definitely help.
If you want to move into something like forensics however, than a degree in a science like chemistry for example, with some criminology classes mixed in would be your better route.

I have to agree the Sociology venue... But Criminology-do you want to be a foot soldier or move up the ranks??? If you want to be a patrol-Detective then Psych or Sociology-Criminology, but if you want to move ahead in rank-Business Administration,Political Science-Human Resources, any of the main stream business degrees, because beleive it or not a PD is a business, you have to make a budget, human resources issues, on and on.

I would imagine degree's in psychology sociology or the like your best bet would be to ring the Oakland Dept and ask them.

Get a criminology degree, become fluent in Spanish (you get paid more) and go to the police academy.

nuclear phycists but you may need to move to NY or Korea for max benefit, but if your thinking of studying do some criminology or pyschology, will help you raise through the ranks faster,

a criminal justice degree would probably help the most, also studing law would probably help too so you can familiarize yourself with the laws in your state.
