I'd ask this question about deaf people. Even when things are spelled out in writitng, they misunderstand ideas totally. I think it may be because they use ASL rather than English which has a different sentense structure. I'm not being "audist", this is a real problem. Anyway, overall, I think it's just that people have preconceived notions in their head which cloud their listening ability and judgement. Things that are not explained well are open to interpretation and can be different than what you thought of. Eveyone has had a different life experiences and up-bringings after all.

People hear what is pleasant to protect themselves from the truth so they subconciously set out to misunderstand. People misunderstand because it is convenient, because they misread communication signals or the meanings of words. Some just are ignorant, don't listen and misunderstand simply because they don't try to understand in the first place.

I think because most people do not listen. They hear, but don't listen to what the other person is saying. I people would just take time to listen and pay attention to people then there would be a lot less misunderstandings.

There are a lot of reasons that people misunderstand. One is that not enough information is given. The information that is given is misleading or at fault. The person receiving the information is not listening or does not hear all of the information. the people are afraid of the person or persons giving the information. The person giving or receiving the information is emotionally upset.
We as humans usually perceive things as they relate to us and usually do not see things from someone else's point of view. We understand information based on our own experiences.

Because they don't give their full attention to what's being said. They start thinking almost as soon as the first few words are said. We are not multi-tasking, if we are thinking while someone is talking, we're going to miss something.
