"what does a $ at the end of a name of a shared file mean? "

Sorry! I actually meant FOLDER. This dollar sign appears in front of the FOLDER name.

a $ at the end of a share means that it is hidden. If it is a C$ or D$ - a drive letter, then that share is ONLY accessable by administrators of that box.

A $ at the end of a SHARE name means the SHARE is hidden. At the beginning or end of a FILE or FOLDER name it is meaningless.
