The term "universe" is used to describe "the totality of all matter and energy that exists in the vastness of space, whether known to human beings or not.", so in short, all that is anything. According to scientists the universe started out as an infinitely dense single point, which began to expand exponentially (The Big Bang). This never made sense to me. If the universe is all that is anything, what is it expanding into? It cannot be nothing, because to be nothing is to not exist, therefore the universe cannot expand into something that isn't there. So if it is something, whether it is known to human beings or not, why not include it also as being a part of our universe. But again, a greater question arises, does the universe end?
Most people cannot fathum an infinite universe, and who can blame them. Throughout our lives we are surrounded but the finite, almost everything we know of ends. I just can't imagine a universe that does end. Like I said, when trying to explain something, think of the opposite, instead of the macro, let us look at the micro. According to science, atoms are the basis of all matter, however, atoms have to be made of something, and that which makes atoms has to be made of something and etc. for infinity. Thus we will never reach a point when we say an atom is made up of blank, but blank is made of nothing, because nothing cannot exist and something cannot be derived from nothing.

The "Known Universe" is finite and in exponential expansion. Its outer extremities indicate a "deceleration", a slowing down. This in turn appears to replicate test tube fluidity experiments where the medium against the wall of a receptacle moves at a decelerated velocity compared to the inner medium. This implies that our Known Universe is self-contained within a sealed membrane and the medium of space against the force that contains it is in deceleration due to its proximity to this cohesive membrane that holds our Known Universe together. It is this sidereal membrane that is in expansion resulting in the continuing dilation of the Known Universe.
Beyond this "universal membrane" is most likely a vastly larger and infinite, Trans-Universal Superstructure containing countless “multiverses” much like our own Known Universe. This superstructure is open to structural conjecture, but the equations indicate that it is a flat immeasurable disk containing 90% more mass than what we are currently able to account for in our sector of the Trans-Universal Superstructure. There may be as much as 37 missing trans-dimensions beyond. Perhaps this is where God resides.

well like someone said, the universe is ever expanding which makes it finite.
my belief is that beyond the universe is oblivion being nothing. no matter, no people, no planets, etc etc etc - nothing.
i think the reason our brain can't comprehend is because we as a people tend to constantly look for meaning where none truly exists. it's not an issue of not being able to understand. it's an issue of not being willing to accept.
i am not saying we can't HOPE there's more. but until we find out what's beyond, we should probably accept the idea that there's nothing. "hope" will make us want to look anyway of course.
my other theory is that it's energy. pure energy.
and God is a good idea in it's conceptual form. it's still somewhat antiquated. remember gods were created so that man could answer questions he could not answer for himself. why does the sun rise? sun god puts it in the sky. then as society gets smarter and smarter, we have less questions and less needs for gods. now we have ONE god who does all the things we still can't understand or explain.
personally, i like the idea of God. however, who created God? ask a religious person that question - he'll give you an even more BS answer than the sun god putting the sign in the sky. to me, it's lazy and irresponsible. but it's the easy way out and people like to take it.
thank god for yahoo answers!

I am VERY prepared to admit that, as a member of the human race, my brain cannot comprehend the universe.
However, stay with me here.......
I do believe that it is through the senses of our bodies that we "experience" the physical universe. Wherever I take my body, that is the centre of my universe. So, no matter how far I travel, the centre of my universe stays with me. My "centre of the universe" is different to your "centre of the universe". So we are each living in parallel universes, and unless I can use your body to experience the universe, our parallel universes will never meet! Just imagine for a moment what it would be like to be floating in space with your eyes shut. You can't see anything, can't hear anything, can't feel anything, can't taste anything, you can't smell anything. Where are you then? Where has the physical universe gone?
Anyway, this is just food for thought.....yummyyyyyyy!!!

The universe is not infinite. At least we can never travel outside of it because the escape velocity is greater than the speed of light and you can't go faster than that. You will always travel in a curve at best and never be able to escape. Just like you could never escape from a black hole.
I hope this keeps your brain from exploding. That would be messy :-)

Even the outside is also universe and so it is called infinite...can you tell me the last number(infinite) in the number system, you cant ..the same way even if something exists beyond the line which you think as the border of universe is also universe..

A lot of people go for the god explanation, which would make the universe infinite.
It is definitely finite so just outside would be nothing.

Here's an idea...
Leave that worry up to the cosmologists and physicists. That's why they exist. And God exists to make the whole universe thing run. Heck, God IS the Universe! Go worry about why your pop-tart is only flat on one side, or where the fire goes when the firefighters put it out (actual questions asked by my baby sister when she was 2-4 yr old. Now she's a 20-yr old math major on an academic free-ride...)

Firstly, the universe is not infinite, the universe is ever expanding, at an exponential rate.
About what could be on the outside?...my brain just exploded...

A big big basketball court. Because you see, OUR universe is inside a basketball of the next OUTER universe.
This has been proved already by the NBA.
