I have an old embroidery table cloth that has rust from the hoop. It has been there for at least 20 years.

I once left a pair of pants to soak to remove an ink stain and wound up leaving an even worse rust stain from the zipper. Five years later, the pants are still around and still fit and still have a rust stain around the zipper. I tried an iron/rust remover product called Whink. It is designed for colorfast materials, toilets bowels and many other things. Do not mix with Clorox or any other chemical as it is an acid based item. I have found it to work well on old bloodstains also, as blood is red due to iron. It can be hard to find but is available at most Ace Hardware and Walmart's. It comes in an ugly bronze bottle, not unlike the old Coppertone sun lotion.

I second susieque's answer of WHINK rust remover. It comes in a brown plastic bottle and can be found in the stain removal section of grocery stores. You can also use it on rust stains in cast iron sinks, toilets, tubs, etc. One bottle will last you forever and it works wonderfully! It is really neat to drip it on the stain and watch it disappear. One tip, though - wear very heavy duty gloves. It is some kind of acid that you won't want to get on your skin.

In the grocery, try WHINK rust remover, or maybe from a hardware store..old product, good one, though!
